The Jim Seeley/Arturo O’Farrill Quintet (Seeley, trumpet;
O’Farrill, electric & acoustic piano; Jed Levy, tenor sax &
flute; Andy Gonzalez, acoustic bass; Phoenix Rivera, drums &
percussion) Zoho ZM 200501 ****:

A completely captivating collection of eight original by Seeley for
this bouncy quintet which blends Latin sounds with the blues. Seeley is
familiar with all the jazz styles and provides plenty of variety in
this collection of tracks. Melody is uppermost in these tunes, and they
are constructed carefully as play-thru compositions – not just charts
set up to allow plenty of solo improvisations. Solita is a bossa nova
tune, and Starry Night stays in the Brazilian vein but reminds one of
Hollywood TV and movie soundtrack music. Forest Path is a more relaxed
piece, but distinguished by another virtuoso trumpet solo from Seeley.
This is a joyous small-group session with a focus on melody; I plan to
audition it frequently.

Tracks: Truth Juice, Solita, Starry Night, Little General, Forest Path,
New Meaning, Cha-Cha Un-uh, Child’s Toy. [www.zohomusic.com]
