Beoga – Live At Stockfisch Studio – Stockfisch Records 180-gram audiophile vinyl SFR 357.8053.1, 49:56 *****:

(Liam Bradley – piano, keys; Niahm Dunne – fiddle, lead vocals; Eamon Murray; bodhran; Damian McKee – button accordion; Sean Og Graham – button accordion, guitar, backing vocals)

With the release of Beoga – Live At Stockfisch Studio, the label has continued its renowned commitment to auditory excellence. When the SACD was reviewed it was apparent that the state of the art engineering had faithfully recreated the instrumental largesse of the Irish band. Additionally, the live recording has now been presented on 180-gram vinyl, with great success. (See my earlier review.)

For proponents of analog vinyl, the LP is resplendent in the organic sound reproduction. The sound of the acoustics, as phrased by these folk-inspired instruments, is detailed with greater nuance and delicacy. The violin runs, especially on slower transitions, have a distinctly rootsy tenor, more like a country fiddle. Vivacious button accordion licks have a natural chromatic flair, enhancing the reedy affinity. Dunne’s ethereal voice is expressive in either incarnation. The spontaneity and spirited feel of live performance is captured in its essence.

For audiophiles, both the SACD and 180-gram vinyl are worthy of the highest consideration.
