Jazz ‘n’ Spirit – Secundo – Berthold Records/Audiomax multichannel SACD (also 2+2+2) 912 1724-6, 66:34 ***:
(Dick Piezunka – tenor sax/sop. sax/ bass clarinet/ percussion; Martin Flindt – concert guitar/ western guitar; Jens Piezunka – doublebass/vocals)
This is evidently the second release from the jazz trio. They have taken Renaissance and Baroque chorales and secular songs and jazzed them up in their arrangements. The composers of the 13 selections include Bach, Schütz, Praetorius, Hassler, and Orlando di Lasso. Some of the tracks are under two minutes, with one running over nine minutes.
These Germans play very skillfully but since nearly all of the selections will be completely unfamiliar to most listeners, it is difficult for the average listener to get into what Jazz ‘n’ Spirit is trying to do. The sonics are very clear, with the three performers spread out on the soundstage. Some jazz aficianados will say however, that they simply don’t swing.
