Voted by many as the best animated Film of the Year, just as Up was in 2010, Puss In Boots shows that Dreamworks Animation can often rise to the heights of Pixar in turning out terrific animated family films. And the 3D effects—usually the best with animated films—are also great. They have taken the ancient fairytales, the twists and transformations of the Shrek movies, and combined it cleverly with everything cat lovers would love to see on the screen. Puss and all the cats in it are so adorable that even cat haters will probably be giving this movie a chance.
Puss and former-friend-now-rival Humpty Dumpty are both in a Mexican orphanage. Humpty Dumpty wants him to join in getting the magic beans that he has been obsessed with all his life. Puss finally gives in at the promptings of sexy nemesis/lover Kitty Soft Paws (so named because an owner foolishly had her de-clawed). The beans, once obtained, grow a giant beanstalk that reaches to the castle in the sky where the huge goose whose baby lays golden eggs lives.  In on the hunt are also Jack and Jill, who turn out to be totally different from the fairytale Jack and Jill. There are some clever dance performances, as in Shrek, many good one-liners and some rather intense scenes that might be a bit much for the very young. One of my favorite bits was Puss going into a bar and ordering a shot of milk which he then lapped up while on the run. The several scenes with multiple cats playing instruments are hilarious. As are the scenes where some of the cats get out of a dangerous situation by enlarging their eyes into dreamy, adorable faces you couldn’t possibly do anything bad to. The rushing over the landscape at just above ground level was very effective in 3D.
Although the actors who voiced the various characters are identified in the credits at the end of the film, you might look up who they are in advance to better appreciate the movie. Banderas is of course perfect for Puss, and Amy Sedaris and John Bob Thornton have great fun with Jack and Jill. Don’t miss the extra animated 3D short The Three Diablos—one of the many extras in this packaged package. A good film like this really makes 3D viewing worthwhile.
