Souvenir Part II – Trondheim Soloists (string orchestra)/Oyvind Gimse – TCHAIKOVSKY: Souvenir of Florence Op. 70; NIELSEN: At the Bier of a Young Artist: Andante lamentoso – 2L 180 gr. audiophile DMM vinyl 2L-090C-LP, 40 min. [Distr. by Naxos] *****:
The other half of the complete Souvenir program on Blu-ray, but on audiophile vinyl at 33⅓. Just so the user will understand this is the second half of the complete album, the vinyl sides are marked C & D instead of A & B.
I reviewed Part I of the Souvenir program here, as well as the complete program on a single audio-only Blu-ray here. Please consult both for the actual reviews.
As I said in the Blu-ray review, I found the vinyl and Blu-ray versions identical. Perhaps if your turntable system is of a higher quality than your Blu-ray deck, you will find the vinyl superior. If they’re similar in quality, the Blu-ray is a cost savings as well as more convenient. If you have a very high level turntable system you may find the rich string tone of this ensemble even more attractive on the vinyl than the Blu-ray. (Of course you won’t have the hi-res surround option.) That’s what I have found with most such comparisons, or in SACD/vinyl comparisons. However, in this case I was amazed to find them identical. Remember, the vinyl is not all-analog in this case, being cut from a DXD 352.8K/24-bit digital master.
