Samsung Pushing Hard to Launch OLED displays – Samsung has decided to back OLED technology rather than 4K displays, while both its rivals—Sony and LG—are advocating 4K (even though there are only 75 4K films available). OLED panels produce faster, brighter and better-colored images, but each pixel burns when a current passes thru it, in a sort of “controlled self-destruction” process. Manufacturers have to ensure that these pixels burn just as brightly over the lifespan of the TV. 55-inch and larger TVs are growing in popularity, and Samsung recently launched a 74-inch LCD TV—the largest panel the firm has ever launched. Samsung also incorporates hybrid vacuum tube technology in their top-of-range home theater systems. LG has filed suit against Samsung, claiming they stole seven of LG’s advanced OLED technology patents, in mobile devices only. Samsung is the world’s No. 1 phone maker, and their first OLED smart TV will be available for the Christmas period.
CEA Supports FCC Adoption of NPRM – In a paroxysm of acronymns, the Consumer Electronics Association announced that it supports the Federal Communications Commission’s adoption of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the auctions of broadcast spectrum. The CEA said they are needed for creating jobs and economic growth and will be unleashing innovative products and services relying on our nation’s valuable spectrum resources. They will ensure that consumers can use their smartphones and tablets to their fullest capabilities. (You can research the other side of this online; basically it is destroying Over The Air (OTA) TV for all those who don’t subscribe to expensive cable services.)
Bowers & Wilkins and Maserati in Partnership – Limited-edition co-branded audio products—including high-performance speakers and headphones—will be the result of a long-term partnership between the leading British audio firm and the Italian sports car maker. A new high-performance OEM autosound system will be available for Maserati cars starting in 2013. An engineer said it will “transform the driving experience.” A marketing effort is being built around the theme of the seven notes produced by Maserati engines. They have already been used to create a series of exclusive tracks composed and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. B&W also designs OEM sound systems for Jaguar, and has a global agreement with Harman for future applications of B&W technologies in the automotive OEM business.
SVS Downsizes High-Power Sub – Home audio supplier SVS has launched the smallest subwoofer in its Ultra series—only 17.4 inches square. It uses a 13.5-inch driver and Class D 1000-watt amp and its SRP is $1599.
