LG Upgrades HTiBs, Soundbars and Docking Speakers – All four home-theater-in-a-box systems now have a 3D Blu-ray player, Bluetooth and LG Smart TV platform which accesses online AV services. The two top models also have Miracast Wi-Fi technology, Sound Privacy, 4K upscaling, 2D-to-3D conversion, and Web browsing. Sound Privacy uses the home Wi-Fi to stream HTiB audio to an app-equipped smartphone or tablet, on which users can listen to the audio via headphones. LG uses Intel’s WiDi technology in its TVs to make wireless connections between the sets and mobile devices. All but the entry-level model feature Aramid Fiber speaker cones, a type of Kevlar used in audiophile speakers, and all four models decode Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD MA and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. LG has also added a 55-inch and a 65-inch LCD TV to their current 84-inch set which are all 4K Ultra High-Definition TVs.  A new 100-inch short throw laser projector has also been added to the LG line. The Hecto Laser TV is a two-piece system that includes a special screen, and can project an image of up to 100 inches from less than 20 inches away from the screen. It doesn’t require a totally dark room as with most projectors.
Samsung and Ericsson Legal Battle – After having some success in a legal battle with Apple, Samsung has now filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Ericsson, saying that they infringed on seven Samsung patents which cover telecommunications networking equipment and base stations. Ericsson had earlier filed a suit against Samsung for infringement on the same type of technology.
New NAD Home Theater Amp – NAD has a new T 977 7-channel power amp to match their T 187 surround sound preamp/processor. It delivers 140 watts continuous power into 4 or 8-ohm speakers, uses mono-block modular construction, balanced differential Class A input circuit technology, and has individual input-gain controls on each channel. NAD PowerDrive technology almost doubles the effective power on transients by adding a second high-voltage rail, and soft-clipping technology limits high-frequency energy during clipping to protect speakers from damage. A thermostatically-controlled fan turns on only when needed.
PSB Launches Compact Sub – Canada’s PSB Speakers has a new SubSeries 125 subwoofer with an output of 125 watts continuous and only about 10” x 14” x 16” in size. It features an 8” polypropylene woofer and slotted port to reduce port noise, and useful low frequency extends down to 31Hz. It also has front-mounted volume and crossover controls and a crossover bypass control.
