Pavane = DEBUSSY: Clair de Lune (from Suite Bergamasque); Préludes – Book 1: No. 8, La fille aux cheveux de lin; DUBUGNON: Incantatio, Op. 12b; Lied, Op. 44b; FAURE: Après un rêve, Op. 7 No. 1; Élégie in C minor, Op. 24; Romance in A major for cello & piano, Op. 69; Pavane, Op. 50; RAVEL: Pavane pour une infante défunte – Maxim Rysanov, viola/ Ashley Wass, piano – BIS multichannel SACD 1773, 52:48 (11/6/12) [Distr. by Qualiton] ****:
If you ever need a soft mood music album, or one to wind down the day over a glass of fine wine, this is it. It might even replace my previous favorite such album, Perchance to Dream on Delos, an album of children’s piano music played by Carol Rosenberger. Maxim Rysanov has stunned me on a few other discs as well, sporting one of the most chocolaty viola tones of the modern era, perhaps surpassing even the remarkable Yuri Bashmet. Here we have many of the most beautiful French classical melodies ever written, all arrangements, and wonderfully presented. Adding to the spice are two pieces by contemporary composer Richard Dubugnon, the Incantatio a sonata in all but name, and the Lied, a transcription of the third movement of his Sonata for double bass and piano. Both are worthy entries into the limited viola repertory, while the others make for a smooth and creamy 50 minutes of listening. Well done all around.
