America’s Most Diverse Festival To Feature Sound Installations – The Big Ears Festival, March 31 thru April 2, will feature sound installations of John Luther Adams’ Veils and Vesper and Lou Reed’s Drones, programming by Laurie Anderson. The installation will run six hours daily, and the listener is able to create their own mix by moving thru the space and basking in the harmonic colors of each piece. The setting is the sanctuary of the former First Christian Church in Knoxille, TN, which will become a place of contemplation and meditation. Other works of Adams will be performed during the festival, including his orchestral work, Become Ocean. The Lou Reed work originates from six of his electric guitars and amps. The New Yorker hails it as “…a cool, dark, hypnotically enveloping environment,”

The Electronic Industry’s Finest Honored at CES – The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has made its annual awards for top honors in digital entertainment products and retailers who market those products. Best Buy was voted the Hardware Retailer of 2015, Amazon the Digital Retailer of the Year, and Target the Software Retailer of the Year. The DEG made four awards in memory of their founder Emiel N. Petrone. They were for the Best UHD TV (LG EF9500 or EG9600 OLED TV), Best Sound Bar (Yamaha YSP-5600), Best Connected Blu-ray Player (Sony BDP-S6500 with Super Wi-Fi) and Most Innovative Home Entertainment Product (Vizio Reference Series 120-inch display). The Creative Excellence awards went to Mad Max: Fury Road and Lost in Space: The Complete Adventures (for Blu-ray), Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation and Star Wars Digital Movie Collection (for Digital HD), Game of Thrones, Season 4 (for Best TV on Blu-ray), Rammstein – Live in Amerika (for Best Blu-ray concert video) and David Bowie – Five Years (for Best Hi-Res Audio Download).

MQA Launches Major Partnerships – At CES, the new Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) codec launched major partnerships with the Norwegian record label 2L, Auralic, Aurender, Bluesound and others. Developed by Bob Stuart of Meridian, the entire 2L digital download catalog has been converted to MQA, which allegedly retains everything in the original hi-res recordings, yet taking no more bandwidth than standard CD quality. Some commentators even say the originals are “scrubbed clean and born anew with MQA.” It will be interesting to hear if the original highest-quality hi-res recordings from 2L, for example, are enhanced even further by MQA – which doesn’t seem possible.
