Geek Wave Offers Concert Quality Sound for Smartphones – That is patently impossible! But here’s the news release anyway: Smartphone users have long complained about three things: poor sound quality, short battery life, and limited storage when listening to music, watching movies or playing games.  Most of the phone manufacturers’ budget goes into the hi-res screen, leaving little for sound components. Geek Wave has a high-performance D-A convertor, added to “Instant Power” technology to deliver twice the power to headphones, making music clearer and louder. Geek Wave also provides an extra 256 gigs of storage to the phones which have only 16 to 64. Plus it makes both MP3 audio files and streaming audio clearer and louder. The Geek Wave high capacity battery can recharge a smartphone twice in half the time of other chargers available. The project—a division of LH Labs, who make expensive high end DACs—is now seeking crowd funding and is halfway to its goal. Various models will be available at rom $239 to $469 by late this year.

Samsung Unveils New Soundbars –  The Sound Stand is the latest of the flat TV speakers from Samsung. It is only 3.9 inches thick, is designed to fit under 32 to 55-inch TVs, and has two subwoofers. It can simulate 4.1 surround according to Samsung. It connects to smartphones and tablets via Bluetooth and can connect wirelessly to the TV. It runs on two AA batteries. The HW-H600 is $375 on Amazon at the moment.  Their HW-H750 sound bar has a tube amp at 320 watts, and can be mounted on TV furniture or wall mounted. It can connect to Samsung’s new Sonos-like multi-room system, setting up a wireless surround system in the living room.

Burning Hi-Res Audio Downloads to DVD – is a very good idea. In fact Linn Records actually recommends that: you should burn your 96/24 and 192/24 downloads to DVD as a method to back up and archive them. There are many people out there who have never given a thought to backing up regularly, and one day when they lose all their expensive audio downloads they may finally put some thought into this. Burn is a free software for Macs which creates DVD-Audio discs on DVD-Rs from hi-res tracks, whether they are FLAC, AIFF or WAV files. You can also author DVD-video discs from video files in various formats. And there are other programs.

Classical Music and Circus Arts Combine in ‘Cirque de la Symphonie’ –  An international troupe of acrobats and gymnasts from Russia, Mongolia and Moldova are performing harrowing feats including aerial skills, contortion and ring juggling. Simultaneously orchestras play classical standards from Bizet, Chabrier, Smetana, Rimsky-Korsakov and others. Cirque de la Symphonie has performed with top symphonies around the country including the Baltimore Symphony with Marin Alsop. They appeared in Columbia, SC on April 1.
