BACH: French Suite No. 5 in D; English Suite No. 3 in d; Prelude, Fugue and Allegro in D; Suite in e – The Katona Twins, duo-guitars – Channel Classics multichannel SACD CCS SA 34713, 63:35 [Distr. by Harmonia mundi] (11/12/13) ****:

The Katona Twins have been called the world’s best-known classical guitar duo. Their technique is fabulous and with the excellent hi-res surround offered by Channel Classics, this becomes a wonderful album for music lovers, even those who may look askance at Bach arrangements. The two suites were originally composed for the harpsichord, and the two solo pieces that follow for the lute, though some musicologists think they may have been written for the lute-harpsichord due to their complexities.

Peter and Zoltan Katona created the arrangements of the Bach works. Though I am partial to the original harpsichord versions of the first two, these are lovely and most listenable versions of all four works. The Prelude, Fugue and Allegro is thought to possess some theological aspects, but it can be listened to just as well as abstract music.
