Editorial for January 2015

by | Jan 1, 2015 | Editorial

This month we are awarding a pair of great jazz albums to a half dozen readers who register using our simple form on the site. Allegra Levy is a New York-based vocalist and composer who has created a collection of 11 harmonically adventurous originals in the tradition of the Great American Songbook. The Vance Thompson Five Plus Six perform works by Ellington, Strayhorn and Monk plus some country and folk gems. The six lucky winners of the two CDs will be chosen from among those who register using our simple form this month, and they will be listed in this space next month.

Here is the lucky winner of the only all-SACD set of Wagner’s top operas, including the Ring Cycle, on 32 PENTATONE SACDs plus a DVD, our December drawing:  Thomas Mowrey, NYC NY.

EDITORIAL

AUDIOPHILE AUDITION began as a local program in San Francisco and then in 1985 as a weekly national radio series hosted by John Sunier, and aired for 13½ years on up to 200 public radio and commercial stations. In September 1998 its web site for program listings was expanded to this free Internet publication. January 2015 is our 190th issue. All disc reviews are added thru the month as they are written and received, usually daily. The five most recent reviews appear at the top of each Section Index. The Home Page lists the five latest published reviews, the Section Index lists the past two months of reviews, and the Archive goes back to January 2001. The Disc Index lists all past reviews.  Vinyls and Pure Audio Blu-rays (and some DVD-As) are included in the SACD/Hi-Res Section, as well as exceptional xrcds.
