This month our drawing/giveaway is for six collector edition sets from Harmonia mundi of the 8-SACD collection of the Complete Beethoven String Quartets performed by the world-famous Tokyo String Quartet. Our review is here. This hi-res multichannel recording is a major sonic improvement over their earlier complete Beethoven set on the RCA CD label, and covers the quartets Nos. 1-16 plus the Grosse Fuge. And these wonderful works—at the heart of the string quartet repertory—seem to bring out the best in whoever records them.
The six winners will be chosen from those AUDIOPHILE AUDITION readers who register this month using our simple form. When you register we don’t share any information except your address of mailing of the discs. The six winners’ names will be listed here next month.
Here are the five lucky winners of our September drawing—for the Maria Callas and Joyce DiDonato CDs from Erato. The discs will be sent out shortly: Leonard Ray, Southgate MI; Peter Gladue, Galloway NJ; Joel Kabakoff, West Hills CA; Charles Houston, San Diego CA; Richard Austin, Atlanta GA.
AUDIOPHILE AUDITION began as a local program in San Francisco and then in 1985 as a weekly national radio series hosted by John Sunier, and aired for 13½ years on up to 200 public radio and commercial stations. In September 1998 its web site for program listings was expanded to this free Internet publication. October 2014 is our 187th issue. All disc reviews are added thru the month as they are written and received, usually daily. The most recent reviews appear at the top of each Section Index. The Home Page lists the five latest published reviews, the Section Index lists the past two months of reviews, and the Archive goes back to January 2001. The Disc Index lists all past reviews. Vinyls and Pure Audio Blu-rays are included in the SACD/Hi-Res Section, as well as exceptional xrcds.
