An enjoyable pianistic time for the tango fan.

Tangos for Piano – From Latin American and EuropeMarcel Worms, p. (TrackList follows) – Zefir ZEF 9657, 73:50 (11/18/16) [Distr. by Naxos] ****:

Soon after its birth in Argentina and Uruguay, the tango moved to Europe and became popular there in some circles. Many famed European composers were captivated by the tango and began to write tangos themsleves. Some of them, like Albeniz, Stravinsky and Weil, are included in this piano recital.

In the middle of the 27-track tango recital are six short Danzas Cubanas by Kawanagh. There are also two recent tangos composed by Dutch composers, one of them written especially for the fine pianist here, Marcel Worms. From the start, the piano played in important part in the tango orchestra, even when it was just a quintet. Many of the major figures in tango were both bandleaders and pianists. The detailed note booklet has a paragraph on each track, and the sonics are fine.
