Eagles Farewell I Tour (2005)

Studio:  Warner Bros.
Video:  1.78:1 Widescreen Enhanced
Audio:  DTS 5.1, PCM Stereo
Extras:  Interviews with the band (11 min)
Length:  160 minutes
Rating:  ****1/2

This tour–the title being a joke by Don Henley–finds The Eagles still
going strong with a presence and fan base that is impressive
considering the age of the band — hardly ready to turn in their
instruments.  Right before the concert begins, the viewer is
treated to a trailer so-to-speak of pre-concert footage.  As for
the technical aspects of the show, this is clearly a first rate
affair.  Everything is fantastic: from the venue, to the lighting,
to the sound on the disc.  There are only two audio options, but
most will have DTS playback capability and that is what I
auditioned.  The audio seems to me to be better balanced and more
natural than the previous live concert audio/videophile favorite Hell
Freezes Over.  This disc plays much more like the studio records
with more material that makes it seem like a greatest hits live
package, although check out the cool, extended introduction on “Funk
#49” and the trumpet solo that opens “Hotel California.”  Some may
prefer the acoustic feel of the older concert, but this performance was
more appealing to me.  The camera work is not overly fast, and the
close-ups and long shots are well chosen with lots of time on the
individual solo performers.  Don Felder is not present due to
infighting with the band, but his replacement does a fine job.

The feel of the concert is very relaxed and comfortable and it was easy
(as a viewer) to sit back and take in the entire show at once even
though it is fairly long.  Intermixed with the standard Eagles
fare is a wealth of solo material from Walsh, Henley, and Frey, and
even some new material that is okay, if not great.  Some of my
favorites that were missing from the song list are: “Witchy Woman,”
“The Best of my Love,” “After the Thrill Is Gone,” Victim of Love,” and
“Those Shoes,” but I guess you can’t play everything.  Behind the
stage is a huge widescreen video screen(s) to add to the involvement in
the show.  Audio comes from all around although it is primarily
the backing instruments that appear from the surrounds along with crowd
noise.  All in all, this is one outstanding rock concert.
