Paul Carr – Musically Yours – PCP Music, 60:31 ****:

(Paul Carr, tenor sax; Terell Stafford, trumpet; Mulgrew Miller, piano; Michael Bowie, bass; Lewis Nash, drums)

Paul Carr’s tribute to Joe Henderson has special meaning to me. When I was privileged to meet Joe Henderson several years before his passing, he autographed a CD booklet, “Musically Yours, Joe Henderson.” On Carr’s third CD, Musically Yours makes another appearance as Carr mentions Joe signing an LP for him in the same manner!

Known largely as a jazz educator in the Washington, DC area, Carr has assembled a dream band to pay homage to Mr. Henderson. They use lesser-known Henderson compositions to show the varied influences and styles that he brought to the jazz public for 40+ years. You’ll find the racehorse pace of Our Thing, the Latin tinged Mamacita, and the gorgeous Black Narcissus, where Carr and Mulgrew Miller blend as one. Carr’s Classroom Agenda’s blues roots are made for Terell Stafford’s funky solo, and Michael Bowie’s spirited bass lines.

Carr’s classy tribute to the multi-faceted Joe Henderson is worthy of purchase for fans of Henderson’s legacy.

TrackList:
Musically Yours, Our thing, Mamacita, Black Narcissus, Classroom Agenda, Night and Day, Granted, Y Todavia LaQuiero, Zsa Zsa, If You Could See Me Now
