Utah Court Puts Injunction on Aereo – Mobile TV service Aareo retransmits broadcast TV signals to mobile devices via Cloud-based storage. They claimed they are not subject to retransmission sonset law because of their technological configuration. Aareo rents tiny antennas to subscribe era who access the multichannel service thru a Cloud-based app, which Aereo labels a “private performance.” A Utah court has, however, ruled in favor of local broadcasters, saying that a commercial enterprise should not be allowed to build a business off the exploitation of copyrighted programming without compensating the owners of that programming.

CEA Urges ‘Innovation-Friendly’ Energy Policy – As the Prime Minister of Canada and President of Mexico meet with Present Obama at the Trilateral North American Leaders Summit in Mexico, Consumer Electronics Association CEO/president Gary Shapiro says the mishmash of Canadian, Mexican and U.S. energy efficiency policies is confusing and costly for businesses and could force consumers to pay higher prices. He says the NAFTA partner countries should have aligned policies that support innovation and economic growth. Shapiro says that would save the three countries more energy, reduce carbon emissions and cut consumers costs.

Denon Lanches Its First USB DAC – The DA-300USB, at $499, available next month, will be a 32-bit 192K asynchronous DAC connecting computers to audio systems via the USB-B port and bypassing the computer’s lower-quality sound card. It also has a headphone amp stage, one coax and two optical digital S/PDIF inputs. It handles formats including MP3, MP4, aAC, ALAC, WAV and FLAC HD up to 192K/24-bit and also supports the DSD format with 2.8MHz and 5.6MHz resolution delivered natively or as PCM. An OLED display shows the input, headphone volume and input signal resolution, and the unit can be positioned horizontally or vertically.

Yamaha Upgrades Entry-Level Soundbar –  The YAS-103 ($299) now has Bluetooth to play back music streamed from mobile devices or computers, along with a free app (Android or iOS) to control the system. The sound bar has dual built-in down-firing subwoofers, two full range drivers, a bass reflex port and proprietary Air Surround Xtreme to deliver virtual 7.1 channel surround sound. Yamaha’s UniVolume technology eliminates volume spikes when TV commercials come on, channels are changed, or sources are switched.

Hyper-Connected Consumers = 48% of Population – According to a Vivaldi Partners survey, these “always on” consumers own at least three connected devices and use them to go online multiple times a day from at least three different locations. These intensely digital consumers differ greatly from their less-connected counterparts in how they connect with brands and businesses. And this powerful part of the economy will continue to grow.
