New Jazz Archives Label – Germany’s Arthaus Musik and Naxos have launched a new CD & DVD series of previously unreleased “live” radio and TV performances by many jazz greats from the archives of the Southwest German Radio in Stuttgart, Baden-Baden and Mainz. The archives hold about 1600 audio and over 350 video recordings of all major modern jazz artists—over 3000 hours’ worth. More than 400 soloists and ensembles are listed, many of them recorded numerous times over the decades. After the war Germany and other European countries gave American jazz artists a warm reception; many performers felt accepted and understood with their art for the first time. People flocked to the concert halls for jazz programs and radio station jazz editors invited top artists and ensembles. In the vaults are music treasures from Duke Ellington, Lester Young, the MJQ, the Jazz Messengers, Quincy Jones, Dave Brubeck Gerry Mulligan and many others. Upcoming European performers, blues and free jazz are also included. The first releases for March 27 include the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in 1969, the Gerry Mulligan Sextet in 1977, and the Benny Goodman Orchestra from 1959.
Here’s the 2012 Grammy Award Winners – which would probably most interest our readers.  (Interesting that not a note of classical or jazz was performed during the 3½-hour Grammy telecast; only a few jazz and classical performers were named who had died during 2011.)
