Questions for RadioShack’s Board – The unsecured creditors of RadioShack was to mount an investigation into whether the firm’s actions before the chain’s bankruptch filing might habe unduly benefitted its lenders.  The group said it is looking to expose possible breaches of fiduciary duty by RadioShack’s board as as any hidden assets. The chain is currently liquidating about half its 4100 locations plans to reopen the remainder later this year co-branded as Sprint and RadioShack stores.

DSI Adds Philips AV Line – National satellite and CE distributor DSI System has added Philips-branded AV products to its assortment. This includes the Philips line of smart HD and 4K UHD TVs, Blu-ray, DVD and DVD/VHS combo players and home theater soundbars. DSI describes itself as the largest national distributor of 4K, HDTV and home theater TVs, satellite equipment, accessories, appliances and furniture.

Dish Systems – To Buy or Sell? – Sometime next year Dish must begin building a cellular network in the spectrum it owns in the AWS-4 band for terrestrial service. It could build out on its own or try to buy carrie T-Mobile to tap its expertise. Deutsche Telekom, owning 67% of T-Mobile, would be interested in selling to the right price. Dish wants to diversity beyond its mature satellite-TV business and possibly use wireless psectrum to offer triple-play packages coming home phone and broadband service with satellite-TV service. It could also deliver subscription-TV content to smartphones if it secures the rights. A merger of T-Mobile and Dish makes sense.

Increase of Channels via Sling TV – Dish Network will expand programming options for its Sling TV video-streaming service with the addition of EPIX linear channels and movies-on-demand. The EPIX content offers more than 2000 movie and entertainment titles on demand. Sling TV is available thru smart TVs, Android, iOS tablets, smartphones, computers, Roku streaming, Amazon’s Fire TV set top box, Fire TV Stick and Xbox One. It delivers subscription-based over-the-top TV servies including domestic and international live and VOD programming, but not local OTA TV stations. Amazon has added Dish’s Sling TV Internet-based TV app to their selection of apps and games.

Carriers Win Spectrum, But Still Not Enough – It will be two or three years before the Advanced Wireless Service 3 spectrum won by carriers during a recent government auction goes online, but the carriers will need more just to keep up with the growing data usage. They will need the extra 600 MHz-band spectrum just to keep up with growing capacity demands in the U.S.  Video as a percent of mobile data traffic in North America is expected to jump to 75% in 2019. There is a continuing shift from feature phones to smartphones, growth of cellular-connected tablets and computers, more machine-to-machine and the Internet of Things connections, and growing mobile video streaming.
