His work made jazz less beholden to the rules of harmony and rhythm and further away from The Great American Songbook. He was sort of a musician-philosopher, with interests well beyond jazz. His duo with trumpeter Don Cherry became well-known in jazz circles. His 2007 album Sound Grammar won a Pulitzer Prize.

English actor, singer and author Christopher Lee had a nearly 70-year career.  He became known for his roles as Count Dracula and others in the Hammer films, and in the ‘70s was in a James Bond film, has been a villian in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, and was in the final two films of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He sang in several opera and musical pieces and appeared with heavy metal bands. He was knighted in 2009.
