Rivals Panasonic and Sony May Unite for TV Battle – The two Japanese firms are in talks to jointly develop the next generation of flat panel TVs—possibly OLED technology—and to compete with the Koreans Samsung and LG, who will release OLED sets in Q3 costing anywhere from $8000 and up. A joint venture could help to offset the massive costs of developing the new TV technology, which is called the next big thing in TV. LG’s OLED TV has features like voice-activated remote control and 3D, and Samsung is working on OLED screens that can bend. Backlighting is no longer needed and 20% less power is consumed than with LCDs.
NetGear Unveils Latest Streaming TV Set-top Device – The NeoTV Pro HD NTV200S adds WIDI wireless to its feature list, allowing users to make easy wireless connections to their laptop to present content on their living room large screen. Video can be streamed at up to 1080p resolution and a variety of online partners includes Pandora, YouTube, NetFlix, Hulu Plus and Vudu. All 32 events of the upcoming summer Olympics in London will be streamed live. the NeoTV Pro has a small flat square design, comes with its own remote and can also be controlled by a smartphone app. Cost is $70.
Classical News – A new $6 million opera center is being planned for Manhattan. Just a little over a year after the opening of the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in NYC, another spectacular performance and rehearsal facility will be set up by Opera America as the National Opera Center. It will have an 89-seat recital/audition hall, ten vocal studios and a large rehearsal hall. Cecilia Bartoli has replaced Riccardo Muti in leadership of the Salzburg Festival, and assembled a week of music and events around the theme of Cleopatra. They included even the Liz Taylor movie and a rare print of the 1934 DeMille epic starring Claudette Colbert, to an hours-long Egyptian-style dinner. Turkish pianist/composer Fazil Say has been formally charged by an Istanbul court for insulting Islamic religious values in Twitter comments he posted. The Israel Wagner Society had planned an all-day event on June 18, with 100 musicians performing Wagner’s music. When the event was announced publicly, Israelis revolted against the playing of the music of Hitler’s favorite composer and the event was cancelled.
CEA Paves the Way for 4K – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) had formed its 4K Working Group forum for manufacturers, retailers and content providers to define 4K technology, discuss content options and educate consumers about the newest era in HDTV.  4K was prominently showcased on many large screens at the January CES, featuring even higher resolution than current hi-def displays.
