THX Sues Apple – THX Ltd. has sued Apple in federal court, alleging that Apple is using patented THX speaker technology in select iOS mobile devices and in iMacs. It involves a narrow-profile speaker configuration that boosts output and is alleged to appear in the iMac, iPad, iPhone 4 and other Apple products. San Rafael, CA-based THX is the developer of performance standards and technologies to improve the sound quality of home, car and cinema audio systems as well as the video performance of Blu-ray players and HDTVs. THX-certified home theater speakers use a wide horizontal dispersion angle and narrow vertical dispersion angle.

Scosche Ships Versatile Vehicle Headend – Scosche’s ControlFreq car stereo receiver uses a free app to turn a smartphone or any Bluetooth device into a touchscreen remote for the car. It also has four 40 watt amps, three RCA outs, a detachable faceplate, a CD player, USB port, SD card slot, and Aux in, plus a built-in mic for hands-free calling. The FM/AM tuner is RDS-enabled. SRP is $139.

Retailer Drops Car Audio, Cameras & PCs – As part of addressing the changing marketplace, 11-store big-box chain American TV & Appliance has dropped the car audio, digital imaging and PC categories to expand in its areas of HDTV, home audio and furniture.

Onkyo Builds Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Into AVRs – Two of three new models of Onkyo AVRs feature both embedded Wi-Fi and stereo Bluetooth. All three models are networked, can stream eight Internet music services, and use DLNA 1.5 technology to stream music stored on networked devices, including mobile devices equipped with Onkyo’s remote app. The TuneIn service for Internet radio and 4K UHD up-scaling passthru have been added. The two models are both 7.2 channels and priced at $599 and $899.

Integra Award from Azione – Azione Unlimited, an educational and buying group for custom relailers and integrators has given its Golden Goose Award to Integra. The quarterly recognition is given to the vendor member that provides the most profit to the group’s dealers during that period. A spokesman said the premium AV component vendor designs and builds components that home-theater enthusiasts love.
