Record Attendance at 2011 Consumer Electronics Show – The International CES has announced that 31,677 industry professionals from outside the U.S. (representing 140 countries) attended the convention in Las Vegas in January – up 30% from last year. Nearly 150,000 technology attendees in total attended during the four-day run. Technology innovation spanned more than 1.6 million net square feet of exhibit space, as an estimated 20,000 new products were launched by more than 2,700 exhibiting companies. More than 12,000 retail buying organizations, 6,500 manufacturers and 3,500 engineering companies came to the 2011 CES. More than 9,500 attendees came to the first Entertainment Matters program, providing entertainment execs the chance to experience the products and technologies delivering their entertainment to the consumer. 100 government leaders also attended the convention, and there were more than 5000 press and industry analysts.

Fox World Cinema to Spotlight Global Mainstream Films
– 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Fox World Cinema – a new premiere line of diverse films from around the world on DVD, VOD (Video On Demand) and Digital Download in the U.S. later this year. American audiences have embraced some foreign films, and filmmakers around the world are creating provocative and entertaining films – many which are seldom seen outside their native countries. Fox World Cinema will introduce these films that transcend language and social differences to American audiences. The studio’s legacy includes such foreign films as Slum Dog Millionaire, L’Auberge Espagnole, My Name Is Khan, and The Last King of Scotland. Following the initial releases, three or four new films will be released bi-annually.

– Alltec is a leading provider of AV and technology products and already has a chain of e-commerce websites focusing on specific products.  The purchased and will re-launch the domain of Headphones.com for headphone products, news, reviews and more, due to the growth of the headphone market in the last several years and the saturation by many extremely low-quality headphones and earbuds. Most of the premium brands will be carried, and there will be in-depth reviews and comparisons of headphone types and brands to simplify the decision-making process.

Samsung & LG  3D Format Fight – Winning or losing the battle for the 3DTV market has been referred to as a tech industry version of the Mortal Kombat game.  The hope is to somehow get consumers to pay a premium for 3D sets, which the industry figured would occur after the success of Avatar. But only 3 million were sold The company with the winning 3D format will have the edge and the rest of the industry may have to follow.   Royal Philips Electronics has already given up and sold their TV unit to an Asian contract manufacturer. LG has unveiled its Cinema 3DTV line, which uses a “film-patterned retarder” (FPR) technology which puts a special film on their screens that works in tandem with the conventional lightweight polarized glasses we know from the movie theaters.
Samsung uses battery-powered shutter glasses and contends that the picture quality is superior.  However, they are heavy and expensive, giving LG the edge price-wise. James Cameron, Avatar’s director, says that consumers will eventually warm to 3D.
