Home Entertainment Report for Q1 2011 – Highlights from the report of the Digital Entertainment Group tracking sources and retail input: Revenue from home entertainment new releases was down 25% and sell-thru was down 18% for the quarter.  The Easter holiday was not part of Q1 this year, which affected the statistics. Software sales of Blu-ray discs were up nearly 10% over the same period last year. 3D Blu-ray software is beginning to show signs of growth. Blu-ray hardware sales were up more than 13% and the total penetration of all Blu-ray devices is now nearly 30 million homes in the U.S. Nearly seven million HDTVs were sold in the U.S. in Q1, up 11% over last year. HDTV penetration is now 64.5 million U.S. households. Digital distribution of both audio and video was up nearly 11% and digital movie transactions were up nearly 10% over the same period last year. The DEG says that value and convenience have the strongest appeal to home entertainment consumers, and an impressive array of blockbuster theatrical releases on disc is expected for the 3rd and 4th quarters, helping the industry to round out the year successfully.

DSI Entertainment Systems Honored for Custom AV Install Projects – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) TechHome Division has given four awards to DSI Entertainment Systems for their custom AV installations, media rooms, and home automation systems.  A Beverly Park, CA media room was awarded both “Platinum Ultimate Home of the Year” and “Retrofit Project of the Year.” It has a 103” Runco plasma TV, Crestron home automation system and Lutron HomeWorks lighting system. “Gold Ultimate Home of the Year” award went to a Malibu, CA beachfront home with AMX automation, a whole-house music system, Sonance architectural speakers and a recessed 103” plasma HDTV. The award for “Best Home Theater/Media Room” went to a Hidden Hills, CA custom home cinema setup with a large Stewart 4-way auto-masking screen that automatically resizes to match the aspect ratio of the picture. The owner is able to watch up to four video sources simultaneously, using three Crestron touch panels and a Crestron video processor. Sound is from a JBL Synthesis THX home cinema sound system which includes a custom acoustically-treated motorized door in order to cover a 12 ft. exterior sliding glass door. The Fortress seats in the home theater all feature D-BOX motion actuation, and the theater’s lobby snack counter includes a flat screen monitor displaying the same image as the home theater.

WiFi Growth to be 63% Over Next Five Years – A report from ABI Research says that the rapid growth of the WiFi market in the last two quarters of 2010 indicates that it will grow by 63% between now and 2016. More people demand mobile Internet access with greater speed and bandwidth, as well as WiFi hotspots in major cities around the world.  The report said that D-Link and Netgear have emerged as serious competitors, TP-Link establishing itself in the consumer segment and in China. As global demand for WiFi increases, the equipment market is expected to see more than 9% compound annual growth rate from now to 2016.

Up to 77 Million Sony Playstation Network Users Told to Cancel Credit Cards – Sony’s network was compromised and users’ personal data stolen as early as April 17, but the firm chose not to tell their customers of the hack attack for several days. Now users have been told to cancel their credit cards due an “illegal and unaurthorized person” who got access to their names, addresses, email addresses, birth dates, user names, passwords, logins, and security questions.  The accounts of children whose accounts were linked to their parents have also been compromised.
