Cliff Eidelman: Symphony for Orchestra and Two Pianos, Night in the Gallery / London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Cliff Eidelman, Michael McHale and Tom Poster, piano / Baby Audio CD EN001 (I2/1/19)

The London Symphony Orchestra performs a grand work inspired by the movement of water, followed by a character driven chamber work inspired by paintings by Rembrandt, Watteau, Géricault, Boucher, de La Tour, Chagall and others.

Eidelman is well known as a film composer, bringing us such sores as Christopher Columbus, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He’s done some concert works as well,

This current offering with Edelman conducting the London Symphony contains two interesting classical works.

The Symphony for Orchestra and Two Pianos is lively and interesting. It’s based on the movement of water.

The new work,  Night in the Gallery stands in contrast to Eidelman’s big symphonic canvas.  The new piece is a four movement work for chamber orchestra, played here by members of the London Symphony Orchestra joined by the piano of Michael McHale. This is a more playful work.

The disc was recorded at the famous Abbey Road Studios, the home of many successful rock albums but also many film scores. The sound of the studios is really excellent. I’ve been inside and heard the acoustics first hand, and they are nicely captured on this recording.

Both works are an easy and pleasant listen. I never felt Eidelman was writing warmed over movie music here. He’s got a unique style that I enjoyed listening to.

The London Symphony offers terrific musicians, so the music, recording and performance combine to give an excellent experience.

Give this disc a try if you want to hear something fresh and not over the top.
