John Sebastian & David Grisman – Satisfied – Acoustic Disc ACD-67, 55:16 **:

John Sebastian, later to become lead singer of The Lovin’ Spoonful, and David Grisman, later to invent Dawg music and run his own record label, Acoustic Disc, first met around the fountain in Washington Square in Manhattan in 1963, where the folkies gathered. Here they are, 40+ years later, reminiscing musically – playing guitar, mandolin, mandolas, banjo mandolin, baritone guitar, harmonica, plus singing and whistling.  Sebastian does most of the vocals, and the tunes are originals, folk, blues, and instrumentals.

The pair tried to be truly eclectic in their program, and perhaps if they’d stayed strictly instrumental it would have been a hoot.  I’m sure it was for them, but for listeners familiar with the John Sebastian of old, the old John Sebastian will be painful. The worst are the Spoonful tunes such as “It’s Not Time Now.”  Ouch!  Also, some of the tune choices just don’t make it: John Henry; Deep Purple?  Really… I’m afraid I’m not Satisfied.

TrackList: I’m Satisfied, Strings of Your Heart, EMD, Deep Purple, John Henry, Walk Right Back, Passing Fantasy, Coffee Blues, Dawg’s Waltz, Lonely One in This Town, It’s Not Time Now, Harmandola Blues, Coconut Grove, Jug Band Waltz.
