What a fine contribution to this second wave of bossa nova Karrin Allyson is offering! She delivers the lyrics in Portuguese, sounding like a real carioca, and she combines them within the same song with sensitive English lyrics that let most of us know exactly what the song is about. Back at the introduction of bossa nova to North America some of the English lyrics writen for them were very corny, but Karrin Allyson has secured more accurate and touching English lyrics for some of these songs.
The title tune is the very first one composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, in 1947, influenced by his favorite composer, Maurice Ravel. It’s about what might happen if two lovers become lost in their passion. The classics such as Desafinado don’t sound a bit corny or clichéd, and all the unfamiliar tunes are simply lovely, with quiet, swinging and sensitive instrumental backing. A bouquet of Brazilian beijos!
