Monday Michiru: Naked Breath – Monday Michiru, vocals; Adam Rogers, guitars – Artist Share Records 0004 – 57 min. **:

Monday Michiru is American-born of Japanese descent; the singer and
actress has spent much of her career working out of Tokyo where she’s a
star of the Japanese underground music scene. Whereas many of her
previous recordings have been lavish, heavily produced undertakings,
this disc, her first for internet-based Artist Share Records, is a much
more intimate affair. Ms. Michiru provides vocals and is accompanied by
Adam Rogers on acoustic guitars. Recording quality is first-rate, and
offers an excellent and very realistic stereo presentation of both
vocalist and guitarist.

Whereas both artists are very talented (there’s a bounty of especially
fine guitar work from Adam Rogers), Monday Michiru’s vocals can be
alternately lovely and both intensely grating. Many of the vocals are
improvised and without lyrics, and although she has an impressive vocal
range, at many points throughout the proceedings, she hits notes that
are darn near excruciating to listen to. We’re not quite talking Yoko
Ono territory here, but I think you get the picture. Which is
unfortunate, because there’s otherwise much to like about this
recording. Try it before you buy it, if at all possible.

Tracks: Native Tongue; Rainbows; I Couldn’t See; Crave; I’m Still Here;
Fading Beauty; Slo; No Matter What; Chasing After The Sun; Will You
Love Me Tomorrow.
