Percussion In Hi-Fi:  Dick Schory’s New Percussion Ensemble/ David Carroll and His Orchestra – HDTT [avail. in various formats from], 63:00 ****1/2 :
Very welcome lighter fare by Dick Schory and David Carroll appears from HDTT to delight and amuse.  This type of release seems to have been far more frequent in the ’50s and ’60s and it’s a pleasure to welcome back these fine releases.
Dick Schory was a percussionist in the Chicago Symphony and glided easily back and forth between light and classical music.  Ever the encourager, he engaged in involving the young in music-making, using instruments familiar to the orchestra, and others derived from kitchen and auto parts, as did Spike Jones in the ’40s and, currently, the Ford Motors in the UK to advertise its Focus.
Schory’s recordings are very much stereo spectaculars with good taste, well, unless you are completely allergic to the medium; and the recording, made in Orchestra Hall in 1960 has spread and depth. The engineers pushed the needles right up to the red, and occasionally a little over it seems, but these instances are few and far between.  The arrangements are witty and amusing with unexpected moments to delight, the ten players and one hundred instruments providing a good deal of variety.
David Carroll (born Nook Schreier) was Mercury’s music director for over ten years from 1951 and was also based in Chicago.  Unsurprisingly, he teamed up with Dick Schory on occasion and these tracks include Schory among the six percussionists.  Recorded in 1956 at Universal Recording Corporation, the sound is, frankly, stunningly good.  The booklet includes details of all of the equipment used, a pair of Telefunken U-47s together with some judiciously placed accent mikes all running to a stereo Ampex 350-2 running at 30 ips.  Again, arrangements hold the listener’s attention, and this generous selection was over far too soon.
For my auditioning of these tracks I downloaded the 24/96 flac files and burned to DVD-A using Cirlinca HD Solo, and also streamed through my sound system at 24/96 via the recently released Musical Fidelity CliC – the files sounded satisfyingly full-fat and are unconditionally recommended.
I’m certainly hoping for a second volume!
