Randy Sandke, trumpet, and the Inside Out Band – Outside In – Evening Star ES-110, 76:11 ****:

Sanke was a new voice to me on trumpet but now that I’ve heard  a
couple of his albums I’m a fan. His tone is rich and colorful and his
original tunes are first rate. On this disc he leads a nonette plus
guest guitarist Howard Alden on one track – the closing Ganjam. Some of
the top sidemen who contribute to the great sound of this band are Ray
Anderson on trombone, Marty Ehrlich on all sorts of reeds, Ken
Peplowski on tenor & clarinet and Uri Caine on piano and vibes.
Another of the band’s reed men, Scott Robinson, doubles on waterphone
and two types of Theremins. A thoughtful listing right next to the
track column is a second column identifying the players who take the
solos on the various tracks. I found this one of the most interesting
larger ensemble jazz CDs I’ve heard in some time.

Tracks: Ganjam, Genesis 1, Revelations 8-11, Outside In, Two As One,
Tonk, Raising Caine, Gulf Stream Dream, Hyde Park, Ornette Chop Suey,
Blues for Joe Klee, Soul in the Wood, Mobius Trip, Ganjam.
