SCHUBERT: 4 Impromptus, D. 899; 4 Impromptus, D. 935 – Chiao
Ying Chang, piano – Audite MultiChannel SACD 92.514,  65:23 ***:

The young Taiwanese pianist Chiao Ying Chang (b. 1981) plays the Kawai
piano very beautifully. The excellent piano sound is the result of
efforts by Ludger Boeckenhoff. That Chang can list Tatiana Nikolaeva as
one of her teachers counts for something. Chang recorded the familiar
sets of Schubert impromptus (1827) in 2003. All of the readings are
gracious and stylish. Now, I have said nice things about everybody. Why
I should recommend this sparkling version of the Impromptus over those
by Brendel, Kuerti, and Edwin Fischer, I cannot imagine. I am still
waiting for EMI to reissue the Gieseking inscriptions; for Sony to
reissue the Firkusny readings.  If I have to hear new artists play
Schubert, why don’t they record his neglected works, such as the cycles
of laendler and German dances?
