A fine and fresh collection of contemporary string music.

Virtuoso Christophe Sirodeau aids in the “rediscovery” of Holocaust composer Viktor Ullmann, whom Sirodeau celebrates as hero, not victim.

MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 3, “Scottish”; Hebrides Overture; SCHUMANN: Piano Concerto in a – Maria Joao Pires, p./ London Sym. Orch./ John Eliot Gardiner – LSO Live Pure Audio Blu-ray & SACD
Quite an impressive package, though the performances are uneven.

Britten quartets lovingly played and striking recorded.

KALVEVI AHO: Concerto for Theremin & Chamber Orch., “Eight Seasons”; Concerto for Horn & Chamber Orch. – Carolina Eyck, theremin/ Annu Salminen, horn/ Lapland Ch. Orch./ John Storgards – BIS
There are few theremin concertos, so this SACD is of top interest to fans of the no-touching electronic instrument.

SOFIA GUBAIDULINA: “Repentance” = Repentance; Serenade for solo guitar; Piano Sonata; Sotto voce – various performers/soloists – BIS
Very interesting collection of chamber works by this characteristically “dark”-sounding composer.
