New Orleans Public Radio Station Restores Classical to FM Dial – WWNO in New Orlean has begun broadcasting classical music on their new stations Classical 104.9 FM. It therefore becomes the only Golf Coast area between Houston and Tallahassee where music lovers can hear classical music anytime thru the year. New Orleans Public Radio continues to transmit the same program on WWNO HD2 in metro New Orleans and the Northshore and beyond via the Internet at wwmo.org/classical. They will have local music features from 9 AM to 1 PM weekdays, and will carry Performance Today, Continuum, and the Met Opera.  Music in NYC – The Budapest Festival Orchestra will appear at David Geffen Hall on the Fifth and Sixth. The Orpheux Chamber Orchestra will premiere Michael Hersch’s End Stages at Carnegie Hall, a tone poem reflecting on mortality, and also at Carnegie Hall, Jordi Savall will present early and modern Venetian instrumental music with his various ensembles on Feb. 12. Sennheiser Looking to Have Own Stores in India – Sennheiser is exploring options to up company-owned stores in India in addition to their five company-owned stores globally. They are talking to the government to relax their 30% local sourcing norm as Sennheiser makes products involving cutting edge technology. This may also pave the way for Apple to set up its own stores in the country, and even Chinese smartphone maker LeEco has applied for relaxation from sourcing for its stores. Celebration of Irish Composers Neglects Women and Composers Under 30 –  The Festival Composing the Island runs from September 7th thru the 25th, extends to seven orchestral concerts and 20 concerts of vocal, chamber, instrumental and choral music. A chronological trajectory thru the orchestral concerts is being used, starting with a 1927 Symphony No. 1 by Ina Boyle. The name of Charles V. Stanford crops up most frequently with 11 works represented including six of his songs. Other composers whose profile is raised by songs are Sir Hamilton Harty, Herbert Hughes and Philip Martin. Adoptions Increase After Shelters Play Classical – The Rescue Animal MP3 Project in North Carolina is one of two shelters, humane societies and rescues across the state which has begun playing classical music in December to help cut the adjustment period for animals. The dogs are much calmer when families come to the shelter. The number of adoptions has nearly quadrupled. A Negative View of Hi-Res Surround for Music – CNET’s AudiophiliacMan Steve Guttenberg has written negative comments before about hi-res surround for music, and on the latest CNET he goes into quad, SACD and DVD-Audio and says they have all failed. Not true. First he says what he calls virtual-reality surround sound has taken off with most new movies, concerts, games and TV shows. Then in the next paragraph he says four speakers are too many for most folks. Well, those with five or 5.1 speakers are enjoying hi-res surround SACDs and the wonderful quad reissues which PentaTone makes. True, DVD-A has practically disappeared, but not totally.
