CPE BACH: Die Letzten Leiden des Erlösers (The Last Sufferings of the Savior) – Soloists/ Hartmut Haenchen – Berlin Classics (2 CDs)
C. P. E. Bach’s oratorio-in-all-but-name builds in color and intensity as it progresses.
CPE BACH: Hamburger Sinfonien 1-6 – Ostrobothian Ch. Orch./ Sakari Oramo – Alba
A remarkably proficient and glowing account of these superb symphonies.
RAMEAU: Pieces du Clavecin (complete harpsichord works) – Mahan Esfahani, harpcd. – Hyperion (2 CDs)
Esfahani throws his hat into the Rameau ring, with quite a lot of success.
HAYDN: Piano Sonata No. 62 in E-flat Major; BEETHOVEN: 11 Bagatelles; SCHUBERT: Piano Sonata No. 21 – Gilbert Kalish, p. – Bridge
In a stirring memorial to his late wife Diane, pianist Gilbert Kalish performs glowing pieces by Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.
CPE BACH: Magnificat; Heilig ist Gott; Sinfonie in D – Elizabeth Watts, sop./ Wiebke Lehmkuhl, alto/ Lothar Odinius, tenor/ Markus Eichae, bass/ RIAS Kammerchor/ Akademie fur Alte Musik/ Hans-Christoph Rademann – Harmonia mundi
A spirited and exemplary performance of essential CPE Bach.
CARL PHILIPP EMANUEL BACH: Berlin Symphonies, Wq. 174, 175, 178, 179, 180, and 181 – Orch. de Chambre de Lausanne / Christian Zacharias – MD&G
Dash and daring from C. P. E., well-captured in these performances from Lausanne.
C.P.E. BACH: Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. II = Sonata in F-sharp Minor; Sonata in E Major; Sonata in C Minor; Sonata in A Major; Fantasie in F-sharp Minor; Rondo in D Minor – Danny Driver, piano – Hyperion
Having shed the “learned” affections of his father, C.P.E. Bach cultivated a “sensitive” and dramatic style that pianist Driver finds completely sympathetic to his own virtuoso ambitions.
BEETHOVEN: Sonatas No. 31 in A-flat, Op. 110; No. 32 in c, Op. 111; C.P.E. BACH: Prelude, Variations, and Fugue in d; Fantasia and Rondo in A – Cameron Watson, piano – MSR Classics
An interesting linkage here, but I am not sure the premise behind this disc is entirely successful.
Frederick the Great: Music for the Berlin Court = GRAUN: Overture and Allegro; Concerto for Viola da gamba; NICHELMANN: Concerto for Cembalo Concertante; FREDERICK THE GREAT: Traverse Flute Sonata No. 190; CPE BACH: Symphony No. 1 – Academy for Old Music – Harmonia mundi
A clever collection that fails to live up to its star billing.
MOZART "Paris & Vienna" = Andante in F; Piano Sonata No. 10; Piano Sonata No. 12; Allegro in B-flat; Adagio in b; Fantasy in c; 6 Variations in F – Gottlieb Wallisch, p. – Linn
This is a thoroughly enjoyable recital by a master Mozartian.
J. S. BACH: Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings in D Minor; C. P. E. BACH: Con. for Organ in G Major; JOHANN CHRISTIAN BACH (attrib.): Con. for Piano – Pieter-Jan Belder, keyboards and cond. / Musica Amphion – Quintone
A good idea very well executed.
C.P.E. BACH: Cello Concertos – Truls Mork, cello/ Les Violons du Roy/Bernard Labadie – Virgin Classics
Cello music of virtuoso caliber by the self-described “emotional” C.P.E. Bach and played with breezy perfection by Mork and the King’s Violins.
