Philip Glass is 80; But Some Classical Music Lovers Hate His Music – His productivity has been amazing: there are ten symphonies, 14 operas, seven string quartets, film scores, 20 piano studies, 11 concertos, and much else. He is also the greatest collaborator among composers since Stravinsky. One of the famous ones was with notorious Robert Wilson, the theatre director with whom he did the five-hour Einstein on the Beach. He is considered the father of minimalism. Things Alexa Cannot Yet Do – The shortfall of Alexa’s IFTT integration is the lack of any actions whatsoever. You cannot complete a task for have Alexa play a tune. You must divide every command into its own statement – no trying to get Alexa to do more than one thing at a time. There are currently no notifications, audio or visual. It would be nice if Alexa spoke the name of the person calling you, but no. Only three words wake Alexa devices: Alexa, Amazon or the name of the device – no customized wake words. There is no voice-memo function – you cannot leave messages for others in your household. Alexa does not distinguish different voices. Audio Issue with Google Pixel Smartphones – All Google Pixel XL smartphones, when you crank up the volume to one of the last three volume settings, produce a static distortion. Not heard on other smartphones. Google doesn’t seem to know about the problem. DEG Hi-Res Audio Pavillion at CES – The Digital Entertainment Group will have a coalition of Hollywood studios, CE retailers, manufacturers, technology providers, and the Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing at the Pavillion, in the Central Hall of the LVCC. People from the RIAA, Japan Audio Society, MQA Ltd, and the major music labels (there are only Warners and Universal now) will also be there. Their  goal is “to bring a studio-quality experience to a new generation of fans.”  A series of live sessions with award-winning music producers and engineers will take place. Attendees will get insight into the process of creating hi-res studio-quality recordings and a perspective on how to better appreciate these recordings as a listener. Dolby Cinema Construction Accelerated – 100 Dolby Cinema theater venues will be completed by the end of this year by AMC Theaters and Dolby. Each venue will be capable of projecting Dolby Vision and using Dolby Atmos immersive sound. The Dolby Vision laser projection system in the theaters delivers high dynamic range (HDR), with richer colors, ultra-deep blacks, and a contrast ratio that exceeds other image technologies. Dolby Atmos complements the enhanced visuals with 3D object-oriented sound that can seem to come from anywhere, including overhead. It makes dialog, music and sound effects more realistic, adding to the sense of immersion. There are currently 22 Dolby Cinema locations in U.S.  The public response to the combination has been enthusiastic nationwide. Latest Editions on Streaming and on Blu-ray – HBO Now has The Get Down Part 1, Hulu has Tonight With John Oliver: Season 3, and Netflix is featuring Barcelona, the fine 1994 film. DEG Second Quartet Home Entertainment Report –  Here are details from the second quarter 2016 Home Entertainment Report compiled by the Digital Entertainment Group for their members: Consumer spending on home entertainment products were up 6% from the year earlier. More than eight million UHD TVs have now been sold. Overall physical sales of Blu-ray discs grew only 3%, while in the same quarter last year it grew 35%.  More than 45 UHD titles are now available on HD Blu-ray discs with sales of some 288,000. Electronic sell-thru or digital HD grew nearly 9%, driven by theatrical content. VOD platforms were up more than 7% for the quarter, and 95% of all U.S. homes have at least one HDTV. Blu-ray playback devices are in more than 85 million U.S. households. Samsung to Supply OLED Displays for Next Apple iPhone – A new report says that Samsung Display in South Korea is getting ready to make flexible OLED displays for Apple iPhone 7. The curved OLED screens will replace the current LTPS TFT LCD screens. Samsung Display is also investing $832 million to make OLED displays for its Galaxy smartphones and Chinese smartphone makers. The latest flexible OLED screens can be folded and rolled up. America’s Most Diverse Festival To Feature Sound Installations – The Big Ears Festival, March 31 thru April 2, will feature sound installations of John Luther Adams’ Veils and Vesper and Lou Reed’s Drones, programming by Laurie Anderson. The installation will run six hours daily, and the listener is able to create their own mix by moving thru the space and basking in the harmonic colors of each piece. The setting is the sanctuary of the former First Christian Church in Knoxille, TN, which will become a place of contemplation and meditation. Other works of Adams will be performed during the festival, including his orchestral work, Become Ocean. The Lou Reed work originates from six of his electric guitars and amps.
