Editorial for June 2015
Navona Records is donating two of their new CD releases to six Audiophile Audition readers this month. They are Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 and Voyage by Pierre Schroeder. The first is from a German-Japanese pianist known for her Bach performances, and the second is a captivating sonic journey using a variety of musical styles in a classical form. Schroeder is a French native who as a child came to music by transcribing movie themes by Nino Rota, Morricone, and others on the family piano. Navona is known for presenting winning artists and undiscovered voices in the classical tradition. To be eligible for the two new CDs, you must register this month using our simple form. Deutsche Grammophon is donating three copies of their new release of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas played by Maurizio Pollini as our May drawing. The 8-CD boxed set was recorded between 1975 and 2014 and most are studio recordings, except for Sonatas Nos. 12 & 21. Here is our review of the set. The complete set will go to three of our readers who register this month using our simple form. The winners will be listed below in early June. This April we are awarding a single boxed 50-CD set which is the most comprehensive selection of the compositions of George Philip Telemann ever offered. A flurry of interest has grown around this composer over the past 30 years, even though his popularity fell away in the 19th century. He was active in both Hamburg and Paris and sensitive to all the styles of the time. Many brilliant Baroque performers are heard on the recordings. Our drawing/giveaway for September will be for a pair of special Erato CD collections by two great operatic voices for five AUDIOPHILE AUDITION readers. In the first, Stella di Napoli, Joyce DiDonato explores the birth of bel canto in Naples with a selection of rarities and world premiere recordings. The beloved American singer brings her flair, power, intelligence and taste to little-known arias of Mercadante, Carafa, Valentini and Pacini. Three bel canto greats—Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti—are included. The second CD is a special 18-track sampler for the complete 69-CD Maria Callas Remastered Collection, for which all the original studio recordings have been reprocessed at Abbey Road Studio at 96K/24-bit. The remastered set is released to mark the 25th Anniversary of the conductor’s death and the 150th Anniversary of Richard Strauss (June 2014). All of Karajan’s R. Strauss analog recordings are included, plus his first Strauss digital recording (Alpine Symphony) and the complete Der Rosenkavilier. Beethoven couldn’t totally escape Mozart’s influence on especially his earlier works. All of his Symphonies (including the Ode to Joy of the Ninth—which has become the anthem for Europe), plus the inventive Piano Concertos and his Overtures are found in the 12-CD box set from Naxos which we are awarding to five lucky AUDIOPHILE AUDITION readers who register this month on our simple form and fill out all fields.
