Dizzy Gillespie & Friends – Concert Of The Century – Justin Time

Dizzy Gillespie & Friends – Concert Of The Century – Justin Time

Dizzy Gillespie & Friends – Concert Of The Century – Justin Time Just 259-2, 60:12 ****: A singular aggregation in top-flight form. (Dizzy Gillespie – trumpet/ Ray Brown – bass/ Milt Jackson – vibes/ Hank Jones – piano/ James Moody – tenor sax & flute/ Philly Joe Jones – drums) For a time after World War II until the mid ‘50s, there was a vibrant jazz scene in Montreal Canada. Clubs like the Alberta Lounge, Café St Michel, Chez Parée, Rockheads Paradise, and the Latin Quarter flourished, thus attracting major international jazz players. Additionally Montreal’s fame grew when artists like Oscar Peterson, Paul Bley, Maynard Ferguson and Oliver Jones, each of whom had been born there, gained recognition in the jazz world. After this terrific period, jazz seemed to lose its way, and Montreal its lustre, due in no small measure to the anti-corruption crackdown that took place in the city which closed the clubs and most other night-life. This phase lasted until Expo 67 launched in the city.  But it was not until the mid ‘70s however, when an immigrant from French Guiana named Rouè-Doudou Boicel, opened a jazz club called The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club, that the […]

Marian Anderson – Let Freedom Ring = Works of DONIZETTI, SCHUBERT, BRAHMS, SCHUBERT SIBELIUS & Others –

Musical and social history are well served by this historic restoration devoted to the art of Marian Anderson. Marian Anderson – Let Freedom Ring = TRAD: “America”; DONIZETTI: “Fia dunque vero…O mio Fernando” from La Favorita; SCHUBERT: Ave Maria; “Gospel Train”; “Trampin’”; BRAHMS: “Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer,” Op. 105, No. 2; “Von ewiger Liebe,” Op. 43, No. 1; SCHUBERT: “Die Forelle”; “Der Erlkoenig”; “Ave Maria”; SAINT-SAENS: “Mon couer s’ouvre a ta voix” from Samson et Dalila; “Comin’ Through the Rye”; KILPINEN: “Von zwei Rosen”; “Det var I varens ljusa tid”; SIBELIUS: Solitude from Belshazzar’s Feast; Black Roses; TRAD: Laeksin mina kesaeyoena kaeymaan; 8 Spirituals – Marian Anderson = JSP Records JSP683, 79:03 (11/4/16) *****: Years ago, at an Atlanta concert that featured bass-baritone William Warfield, I asked him if Paul Robeson were a model or icon whom he followed. Obviously uncomfortable with my question, Warfield commented, “Why, no; if anyone were my ‘idol,’ it would have be Marian Anderson.” Philadelphia native Marian Anderson (1897-1993) remains a vital part of the Civil Rights Movement albeit less “volatile” a figure than Robeson – given the scandalous behavior of Constitution Hall manager Fred Hand and the Daughters of the American Revolution in […]

MAX REGER: The Complete Organ Works – Martin Schmeding, organ – Cybele 17 SACD set

MAX REGER: The Complete Organ Works – Martin Schmeding, organ – Cybele 17 SACD set

The complete organ works of Reger on 16 binaural SACDs plus an interview. MAX REGER: The Complete Organ Works [TrackList follows] – Martin Schmeding, at 13 different historic Sauer & Walcker organs, Dom zu Berlin, Wiesbaden & elsewhere – 17 multichannel (binaural stereo channels) SACDs in gold-stamped collectors’ box – Vol. 17 is interview of organist (in German) by Mirjam Wiesemann – TT: 19 hrs., 24:36 + 172-p. colored booklet – (4/12/16) *****: This is a first. Not only does the exceptional package contain all of the astonishingly complex organ works of Max Reger, but in addition to a fine 5.1-channel hi-res SACD layer, plus a standard CD stereo layer (as all hybrid SACDs now have), there is also a two-channel binaural layer of all the works, for listening on a pair of good headphones. Never mind the interview if you don’t understand German. The 3D artificial head recording technique used by Cybele puts the listener (if your hearing fairly closely matches that of the headphones) almost directly on the scene as if we was in front of the organs being heard. A dummy head with sensitive microphones where the ears are is used, and the phase relationships are therefore […]
