For volume two we are using the Marcussen & Son organ from the Netherlands (1973). The five piano concerti of Beethoven remain staples of the concerto repertoire and are recognized as masterpieces that bridge those of Mozart to the early Romantics; many of whom modeled their creations after those of Beethoven. These releases are both fairly recent and give us a very rewarding look into two of the finest younger Beethoven interpreters playing today. Of the two powerful and talented pianists, I was less familiar with the young Dutchman Hannes Minnaar. He is a wonderfully skilled performer and his work here with the Netherlands Symphony in the Concertos No.1 and No. 2 is of top quality, and in treatments – under maestro Jan Willem de Vriend […]

RUUD VAN EETEN: “Inner Music” = Punctus Einz; Jhero; Piano Quintet No. 1 – Amstel Sax Q./Matangi String Q./Saskia Lankhoorn, p.– Navona
An interesting but incomplete impression left by these unfamiliar works.
MOZART: Requiem – Genia Kuhmeier, sop./ Bernarda Fink, contralto/ Mark Padmore, tenor/ Gerald Finley, bass/ Netherlands Radio Choir/ Royal Concertgebouw Orch./ Mariss Jansons – RCO Live
Fabulous sound and singing, a little bit of interpretative waywardness, but overall a contender in the Mozart Requiem surround sound sweepstakes.
MAHLER: Complete Symphonies 1 – 10; etc. – Royal Concertgebouw Orch. (various conductors), Blu-ray (2013, 11 discs)
This is a quite amazing collection of all the Mahler symphonies, including Deryck Cooke’s revision of No. 10.
GLAZOUNOV; LEFANU; MEYER: Saxophone Concertos – John-Edward Kelly, alto sax – Netherlands Radio Ch. Philharmonic/John-Edward Kelly & Micha Hamel, cond. – Neos
Three saxophone concertos, Glazounov’s classic, and two modern compositions, demonstrate musical chemistry between the alto saxophone and a string orchestra.
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 1 in f; No. 2 in B-flat, “To October”; No. 3 in E-flat, “The First of May” – Netherlands Radio Choir and Philharmonic Orch./ Mark Wigglesworth – Bis
This is a most auspicious penultimate ending to a new Shostakovich series that promises to be among the best.
“Chameleon” – Øystein Baadsvik, tuba/Fanfare Band of Royal Netherlands Army/ Tijmen Botma – BIS
A most unusual disc, with superb sound and performances.
PUCCINI: La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) – Blu-ray
Are we really ready for a Hollywood modernist takeoff on the old West?
