Lionel LOUEKE: Close Your Eyes – Newvelle Records

Lionel LOUEKE: Close Your Eyes – Newvelle Records

Lionel LOUEKE: Close Your Eyes – Newvelle Records 015 – 45:46 (June 2018): ****: (Lionel Loueke; guitar, Ruben Rogers;bass, Eric Harland; drums) State of the art vinyl release by Newvelle Records which maintains the high musical standards of its predecessors.  Newvelle Records is in its third season of a unique project of producing new music, released on vinyl only, sold by subscription (only six records per year). These 180 gram LPs come handsomely-packaged with the inclusion of specially commissioned art and oblique literary works, which may or may not relate to the music. Their stated goal is to reconnect the jazz fan to the original thrill of the medium. Part of this may be considered the two-month drama of waiting for the next release. There is something special in unwrapping an LP and watching the dual-fold open with its potent suspense. And how much more rewarding it is to find a product pared down to an essential work of art. There is no plastic, no video-tie ins, no photos, bio, dedications, resumes. In short, there are two pieces of art (credited on cover) and an accompanying literary piece of uncertain description and a single disc of transparent vinyl. Apparently, given […]

Andy Zimmerman – Half Light – Newvelle Records

Andy Zimmerman – Half Light – Newvelle Records

When beauty is paramount… Andy Zimmerman – Half Light – Newvelle Records NV014LP – Audiophile Vinyl – ****1/2 (Andy Zimmerman – tenor sax; Dave Douglas – trumpet – Kevin Hays – piano; Matt Penman – bass) Newvelle Records continues their third season of subscription audiophile vinyl releases with tenor saxophonist, Andy Zimmerman, and his drummer less quartet. Half Light, has a consistent theme of romantic lyrical explorations. Newvelle has a vision of letting their artists follow a path of complete freedom. Standards can be reintroduced, but it is with a fresh open mind. Here, Zimmerman explores lyrical beauty without the ballast and underpinning of a drummer. Bassist, Matt Penman, provides the bottom end with panache and full involvement, much like Scott LaFaro provided for Bill Evans. Dave Douglas, on trumpet, both provides a blending partner as well as a burnished soloist, often times with a mute. Pianist, Kevin Hays, using the same Fazioli piano as did Jack DeJohnette, on a previous sumptuous Newvelle release, is front and center with  sparkling choruses that both support and invigorate the front line horns. I can’t emphasize enough the stunning acoustics captured by Marc Urselli at East Side Sound in New York City. Marc […]

Ben Allison – Quiet Revolution – Newvelle Records – vinyl

Ben Allison – Quiet Revolution – Newvelle Records – vinyl

Ben Allison’s drummer-less trio – honors Jim Hall & Jimmy Giuffre… Ben Allison – Quiet Revolution – Newvelle Records NV005LP – audiophile vinyl ****1/2: (Ben Allison – bass; Ted Nash – tenor sax & clarinet; Steve Cardenas – steel-string guitar) The concept of a drummer-less trio is not a new one for jazz. The concept goes back to at least trios with Oscar Peterson, and Nat King Cole. Having the trio not include a pianist is only a bit harder to find, but the trio of Lucky Thompson, Skeeter Best, and Oscar Pettiford come to mind. Among the most noted for utilizing this concept were guitarist Jim Hall and multi-reedist Jimmy Giuffre. Bassist Ben Allison is the latest to record with saxophone and guitar, and in a gorgeous-sounding audiophile vinyl just issued by Newvelle Records for their subscription series, Allison is paired with Ted Nash and Steve Cardenas to honor Giuffre and Hall. In addition to the honorees, Allison and Nash each contribute a composition as well as the inclusion of the “Love Theme from Spartacus.” What is immediately apparent in listening to this marvelous sounding LP is the joy and creative interplay between the trio. Watching a YouTube video […]

Jack DeJohnette, piano – Return – Newvelle – vinyl

Jack DeJohnette, piano – Return – Newvelle – vinyl

Jack DeJohnette opens his heart and soul… Jack DeJohnette – Return – Newvelle Records NV002LP – vinyl ****: (Jack DeJohnette – solo piano) As the second release in the Newvelle Records bi-monthly subscription series, the label is issuing the first solo piano recording from drummer Jack DeJohnette. This is not a vanity release, as Jack had extensive piano training prior to concentrating on his illustrious career as an iconic jazz drummer. Newvelle’s mission is to present an artist’s vision in high end packaging, both providing state of the art sonic reproduction as well as a gate fold presentation with archival photography. Their integrity motivated DeJohnette to record both new tracks as well as piano interpretations of some of his favorite compositions. Recorded on a magnificent nine foot Fazioli grand piano, the ten recorded tunes are on gorgeous clear 180 gm vinyl, make an audiophile listening pleasure. [Lampblack has long been known to reduce vinyl surface noise, and that is why it is used in most pressings…Ed.] The crystalline acoustics feature crisp pedal sustain, and the high register notes are almost piercing in their clarity. This is contemplative music, highly percussive, rhythmic, with deeply felt emotion. Jack expresses his musical talents […]
