Pianist Minh and a rich hour of Glinka’s piano music, revealing a lyricist fond of variation form. GLINKA: Variations in e on Alyabyev’s Romance “The Nightingale”; Nocturne in E-flat Major; Variations in a on the Russian song “Down in the Deep Valley”; Nocturne in f, “Le Separation”; A Greeting to My Homeland – Suite; Variations […]

Hinrich Alpers – RAVEL: Complete Piano Works – Honens (2 CDs)
The piano music of Maurice Ravel has a powerful acolyte in Hinrich Alpers.

ALEXANDER SCRIABIN: The Complete Works (Playlist follows) – Decca (18 CDs)
An amazing collection of his complete works, in mostly excellent versions.

JOHN CAGE: One Seven; Four Six – Sabine Liebner, piano – Wergo
Sixty minutes of John Cage for the fully aware.

FRANCK: Piano Works [TrackList follows] – Jorg Demus, piano – Piano Classics
Jorg Demus plays a rare anthology of Cesar Franck, well beyond the usual cluster of three masterpieces.

ERIK SATIE: Nearly Complete Piano Works – Klara Körmendi, piano – Naxos (5 CDs set)
A bargain way to get most all of Satie’s piano music in excellent performances.

DUKAS: Comp. Piano Works – Laurent Wagschal, p. – Timpani
Wagschal’s interpretations are very satisfying, but if you buy, make sure the technical flaw in the recording has been corrected.

MENDELSSOHN: Preludes And Fugues, Op. 37 and Op. 35 – Adam Lenart, organ – MD&G
Much to like in this collection of excellently-performed and recorded Mendelssohn organ works.

WEINBERG: Complete Piano Works 4 — Piano Sonata No. 3; Piano Sonata No. 5; Two Fugues; Piano Sonata No. 6 – Allison Brewster Franzetti, p. – Grand Piano
This series should prove another milestone on the road to redefining Weinberg’s status.

GLIERE: Piano Works = Six morceaux; Five Preludes; Trois morceaux; Trois Mazurkas; Eight Easy Pieces; Six pieces; Trois morceaux; 10 Sketches – Corinna Simon, p. – Delta
A series of pleasant and often passionate surprises from Reinhold Gliere’s keyboard legacy, a treasure chest no more to be neglected.

BORTKIEWICZ: Piano Works, Volumes 8 – 9 = Impressions; Ein Roman fuer Klavier; Trois Morceaux; Two pieces; Kindheit – Jouni Somero, p. – FC Records (2 CDs)
The relatively unknown piano scores of Sergei Bortkiewicz in these volumes bespeak debts to the romantics Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, and Grieg.

SZYMANOWSKI: Piano Works, Vol. 2 = Fantasia in C; Masques – Three Pieces for Piano; Mazurkas 1-4; Two Mazurkas – Anu Vehvilainen, p. – Alba
The piano music of Karol Szymanowski offers a series of challenges to the interpreter, much of which derives from having to balance the composer’s programmatic and nationalistic impulses with the technical demands.

REBIKOV: Piano Works = Jouni Somero, piano – FC Records
Moody, autumnal character pieces from Vladimir Rebikov confirm his status as a miniaturist in the style of Grieg and Scriabin

BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonata No. 7 in D Major; Piano Sonata No. 12, “Funeral March”; Piano Sonata No. 23, “Appassionata” – Sviatoslav Richter, p. – Supraphon Archiv
Richter in 1959 plays three Beethoven sonatas with heroic abandon, especially the “Appassionata,” which quite takes the audience and us by storm.

BORTKIEWICZ: Piano Works Vols. 1 & 5 – Jonni Somero, p. – FC Records (Finland) (2 CDs)
Volume 1 features works from early and late in Bortkiewicz’s career. This is a good idea; what I hear bodes well for the rest of the series, which amounts to eight volumes total.
SZYMANOWSKI: Piano Works Vol. 1 = Nine Preludes, Op. 1; Serenade No. 7, Op. 55; Métopes: Three Poems for Piano, Op. 29; Sonata No. 3 for Piano, Op. 36 – Anu Vehviläinen, piano – Alba
This very recommendable disc gives us so fine a snapshot of Szymanowski’s growth as a piano composer.
OLIVIER MESSIAEN: Complete Works for Piano Solo, Vol. 1 = Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus (20 Gazes on the Infant Jesus) – Markus Bellheim, piano – NEOS (2)
A terrific launch of the complete Messiaen piano music on SACD.
