SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 6 in d; Symphony No. 7; Tapiola – Atlanta Sym. Orch./ Robert Spano – ASO Media
A fine display of the Atlanta Symphony’s impressive credentials in the music of Sibelius.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6, “Pathetique” – Vienna Philharmonic Orch./ Valery Gergiev – Decca Pure Audio Blu-ray
A very good reading on a skimpy two-channel high-quality reissue that demands much more.

MAHLER: Symphony No. 6 in a minor – Bamberger Sym./ Jonathan Nott – Tudor
A solid Mahler Sixth Symphony with fine sonics.

BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 6 cond. by Barenboim, Blu-ray (2014)
A lovely recording and performance of this worthwhile Bruckner Symphony.

DVORÁK: Symphony No. 6; The Water Goblin – Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg/ Marcus Bosch – Coviello Classics
A splendid performance and recording of a popular symphony and a less well-known tone poem.

PETER MAXWELL DAVIES: Symphony No. 6 – Time and the Raven – An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise – Royal Philharmonic Orch./ Sir Peter Maxwell Davies – Naxos
Two out of the three works here are terrific!

Superb playing and sound, but not enough beef.

VILLA-LOBOS: Symphony No. 6 "On the Outline of the Mountains of Brazil"; Symphony No. 7 – Sao Paulo Sym. Orch./Isaac Karabtchevsky – Naxos
The first volume in a Naxos series devoted to the Villa-Lobos symphonies offers two colorful essays in the form that break away from the “native tradition” pigeonhole that often defines his music.

WEINBERG: Symphony No. 6 for boys’ choir and orch.; Sinfonietta No. 1 – Vienna Boys’ Choir/ Vienna Sym. Orch./ Vladimir Fedoseyev / Sym. Orch. Vorarlberg / Gerard Korsten – Neos
A forgotten composer? Not anymore, thanks to excellent recordings such as Neos’ Weinberg Edition Volume 1.
MAHLER: Symphony No. 6 in A Minor – Boston Symphony Orchestra/Erich Leinsdorf – HDTT
Brilliant, inflammatory Mahler from Erich Leinsdorf in 1966, here in aroused audiophile splendor courtesy of the HDTT Weiss conversion process.
DVORAK: Symphonies No. 6 & No. 9 “From the New World” – Baltimore Sym. Orch./ Marin Alsop – Naxos Audio-only Blu-ray
Alsop has raised the Baltimore Symphony to a very high standard, and the lossless Blu-ray ray audio captures it with much better fidelity than the lossy codecs of standard DVDs.
