Boyd Neel, conductor Neel was born (July 19, 1905) in Blackheath, London, and as a child wanted to be a pianist. His mother, Ruby Le Couteur, was a professional accompanist, and his father was an engineer. Neel attended Osborne Naval College and then Dartmouth, and was commissioned in the Royal Navy. Soon afterwards, the armed forces underwent a drastic reduction, and Neel left the navy to study medicine at Caius College, Cambridge. He qualified in 1930, and became House Surgeon and Physician at Saint George’s Hospital, London, and Resident Doctor at King Edward VII’s Hospital, London. In 1930, while practicing medicine, Neel studied music theory and orchestration at the Guildhall School of Music. For Neel, music was still a hobby. He conducted amateur groups and formed an orchestra of young professionals, whom he recruited in 1932 from the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. The Music Treasury for 28 April 2019 — Jeanne-Marie Darré, pianist
The Music Treasury this week presents the works of pianist Jeanne-Marie Darré. Darré was recognized early for piano kills, and was performing widely in her teens. There are also early recordings of her works, from the 1920s. The show airs from 19:00 to 21:00 PDT from Stanford’s KZSU, with streaming at kzsu.stanford.edu. Dr Gary Lemco hosts the evening show. Jeanne-Marie Darré, pianist Jeanne-Marie Darré (1905-1999) studied first with her mother from the age of 5, then at the Paris Conservatoire with Isidor Philipp and Marguerite Long, receiving a premier prix in 1919. She made her debut the following year at the age of 14 at the Salle Érard in Paris, and by the age of 16 was playing many concerts in France, England and Hungary. Her mother accompanied her, and whilst in Budapest around 1922 they attended a concert by Vladimir Horowitz. Darré later said, ‘Horowitz was really my inspiration. I realized then that music and the piano were the most important things. For me he is the greatest.’ Darré received guidance from István Thomán and Margit Vargas, both pupils of Franz Liszt, and from Count Apponyi, who was an intimate friend of Liszt. This week, The Music Treasury will spotlight the extraordinary career of Hungarian violinist Tibor Varga. His multi-faceted career includes: a concertizing soloist; a strong champion of 20th century works by Bartok, Berg, Webern, Schoenberg; founding of a music school of distinction, with a long list of stellar graduates; formation of orchestral ensembles, festivals, and violin competitions; and an extremely highly regarded conductor world-wide. Lorrin Koran has assembled the following notes on Tibor Varga. Tibor Varga, violinist Tibor Varga (1921-2003) was born in Győr, Hungary, in the same region as violinists Joseph Joachim, Leopold Auer, and Carl Flesch, and the famous conductor Hans Richter. Young Varga took his first lessons at the age of two and a half with his father Lajos Varga, an excellent violinist. However, due to an injury during the War, Lajos Varga had to abandon his prospects for being a concert artist and became a violin maker.
