The story line is better than most kid’s films and the various animal characters are a great surprise. Buster is the determined little koala bear who is struggling to save his theater. He sometimes stretches the truth, but his passion and optimism are contagious. His alligator office lady makes an error on the prize for a singing competition he distributes from $1000 to $100,00, and a huge line of hopeful animals come to try out the auditions. There is Rosita – a selfless homemaker […]
JON GIBSON: Relative Calm – Jon Gibson, saxes and keyboards/Joseph Kubera, keyboards/David Van Tieghem, perc. – New World
A look back at one of the ‘founders’ of minimalism well worth your while! JON GIBSON: Relative Calm – Jon Gibson, saxes and keyboards/Joseph Kubera, keyboards/David Van Tieghem, percussion – New World 8783-2 [Distr. by Albany], 69:06, (11/04/16) ****: I first became aware of Jon Gibson some forty years ago while he was still a member of the Philip Glass Ensemble. My admiration for Jon at the time was solidly (but only) due to his appreciable saxophone skills. I learned of his skills as a composer who could very capably bend the edges of what was then the minimalism genre through his Two Pieces (minimal though they are, they do not ‘mirror’ Philip Glass and others) on vinyl LP which has recently been rereleased on CD. Relative Calm on CD is a major find. From the press materials, Gibson is “one of the less frequently mentioned pioneering composers of minimal music and is probably best known as a founding member of the Philip Glass Ensemble. Gibson also holds the unique distinction of having performed with Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and La Monte Young (as a member of the Theatre of Eternal Music). In addition to Glass, the four composers are […]
RAMEAU: Pieces du Clavecin (complete harpsichord works) – Mahan Esfahani, harpcd. – Hyperion (2 CDs)
Esfahani throws his hat into the Rameau ring, with quite a lot of success.
LULLY: Amadis (complete opera) – soloists/ Choeur de Chambre de Namur/ Les Talens Lyriques/ Christophe Rousset – Aparte (3 CDs)
Amadis may not be a highlight of the Lully catalog, but still represents a significant effort on the part of the composer.
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphonies Nos. 4, 5 & 6 – Valery Gergiev, Mariinksy Orch. – multichannel SACD Mariinsky (2 discs)
Committed performances and fine recording of these three symphonies from a chaotic period for the composer.
WAGNER: Excerpts from The Ring & Parsifal with many soloists & orch./ cond. by Karl Muck – Pristine Audio (2 CD-Rs.)
A glorious restoration of the 1927-1928 Parsifal recordings led by Karl Muck, considered master of this opera’s especial ethos.
BIZET: L’Arlésienne Suites Nos. 1 & 2; FAURE: Masques et Bergamasques; GOUNOD: Faust – Ballet Music – Orch. de la Suisse Romande/ Kazuki Yamada – PentaTone
A most enjoyable collection of dance-influenced music by Bizet, Gounod & Faure.
“AGOSTINO STEFFANI: Danze e Ouvertures” – I Barocchisti /Coro della Radiotelevisione Sviszzera/ Diego Fasolis – Decca
Thrilling! The third disc of Steffani from Diego Fasolis and I Barocchisti is a must-have for lovers of Baroque orchestral music.
