ULLMANN: The Complete Works for Piano Solo = Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 thru 7; Variations & Double Fugue – Christophe Sirodeau, p. – BIS (2 CDs)
Virtuoso Christophe Sirodeau aids in the “rediscovery” of Holocaust composer Viktor Ullmann, whom Sirodeau celebrates as hero, not victim.
PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 3; Symphony No. 5 – Denis Matsuev, p./ Mariinsky Orch./ Valery Gergiev – Mariinsky
Exceptional performances of both works – a good fit for Gergiev’s strong approach.
“DIMITAR NENOV: Piano Music” = Theme and Variations; Fairy Tale and Dance; Miniatures; Dance; Etude No. 1; Etude No. 2; Toccata; Cinema Suite – Viktor Valkov, p. – Grand Piano
Dimitar Nenov seems to have been a composer constantly in transition. For me, the earlier work is more interesting, but pianist Viktor Valkov makes it all worth hearing.
