SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 9; Violin Concerto No. 1 – Valery Gergiev/ Mariinsky Orch. / Leonidas Kavakos, v. – Mariinsky
The enigmatic Shostakovich 9th, with the superb Violin Concerto No. 1.
BRAHMS: Symphonies, No. 1 in c; No. 2 in D; Tragic Ov.; Variations on a Theme of Haydn – London Sym./ Orch./ Valery Gergiev – LSO Live (2 SACDs)
Gergiev finally gets around to Brahms, and continues to impress and surprise.
SHOSTAKOVITCH: Symphony No. 8 – Mariinsky Orch./ Valery Gergiev – Mariinsky
An excellent recording and performance of this lesser-known symphony.
WAGNER: Das Rheingold (complete opera) – Rene Pape (Wotan)/ Stephan Rugamer (Loge)/ Ekaterina Gubanova (Fricka)/ Evgeny Nikitin (Fasolt)/ Nikolai Putilin (Alberich) – Mariinsky Orch./ Valery Gergiev – Mariinksky (2 discs)
I have some issues with this otherwise sterling production, but even if it doesn’t match Janowski in pacing and drama, it’s still a good opener for this series.
RAVEL: Daphnis et Chloé (complete ballet); Boléro; Pavane – London Symphony Chorus & Symphony Orchestra/Valery Gergiev – LSO Live
Gergiev’s fantastic conducting job here brings out the color and dynamics while highlighting every small detail.
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphonies Nos. 2 (“To October”) and 11 (“The Year 1905”) – Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus/ Valery Gergiev – Mariinsky
A fully reasoned Second but disappointing Eleventh.
