As the never-ending saga of The Rolling Stones continues with a 2015 outdoor stadium tour, there is a plethora of reissued catalog available. One of these is a 45 rpm 12” numbered limited edition vinyl single of the career-defining #1 hit “Satisfaction”. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original London release in 1965, Abkco Records has recreated the original artwork (photographer David Bailey) and re-mastered the original mono tapes to audiophile vinyl. From the opening guitar hook of Keith Richards, it is clear that the Jagger/Richard songwriting partnership has emerged as a force. The lyrics reflect the mid-sixties with references to sexual frustration and social commercialism. The song represents and transcends the era with its socio-political declarations and the emergence of a trademark sound.
“Satisfaction” was a monumental song. Jagger’s swaggering vocals are supported by the muscular drum work of Charlie Watts. His drum breaks and uncanny timing with Richards is a cornerstone to the musical dynamics. Also included are both “B” sides, blues/pop arrangements that showcase a band founded on American blues. “The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man” is a satirical music industry number with Jagger blasting on mouthharp. The guitar work by Richards is clean and legendary studio musician Jack Nitzsche adds piano. “The Spider And The Fly” feels like homage to Jimmy Reed with keith Richard’s country-infused hooks. These cuts are dwarfed by the originality of “Satisfaction”.
The re-mastered mono sound really boosts the crispness of the guitar, harp and vocals. But the high-priced audiophile single (under 11 minutes) may be a dubious legacy to cautionary rock and roll publishing circumstance.
