This excellent young saxist was recording live last year at BIMHUIS, a music performance center in Amsterdam. Postma only got her Master’s degree at The Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2003, and she also studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City.  She has been nominated or won more than eight international jazz prizes, and her first CD was on the Jazzweek charts for months and her album is still heard on over 200 U.S. radio stations.

Postma names some of her influences as being Cannonball Adderly, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Weather Report, and the Miles Davis Quintet. She has strong abilities in many different styles of jazz, including fusion, soul and traditional, and these inform her distinctive approach to the sax. All nine tunes performed here are her originals except for Gordon Jenkins’ Goodbye. They are varied, most enjoyable, and even at the wildest improvisatory meanderings don’t venture too far from the melodic and lyrical. The rest of her sextet are fine players and are beautifully picked up in the wide range DTS multichannel mix. Plus Postma is pleasant to look at for 70 minutes.  I don’t see how even the finest SACD or DVD-A audio-only disc could convey any better the satisfying listening experience provided by this well-produced music video.

Selections: Summersong, Comprehension, Joe’s Tune, Song for SeaTee, Firenze, Goodbye, Ballad for Dado, Pump it up, For the rhythm.
