Wayne Shorter – In Memoriam

Recently, the jazz world lost an icon…Wayne Shorter. The tenor and soprano saxophonist enjoyed a notable, influential career as an instrumentalist, arranger and composer.

Shorter first garnered attention as a member and composer for Art Blakey in the late 1950’s. He was a member of the Miles Davis Second Great Quintet. Additionally, he was an acclaimed band leader, recording over 20 albums.

Like Davis and others from this era, Shorter was a conduit from traditional jazz to the new evolving genre of fusion. He co-founded Weather Report (after playing on Bitches Brew) and helped to maneuver jazz into the mainstream with rock, funk, r & b and expanded tonality.

Shorter became masterful on soprano saxophone, adding an edgier texture to his music. His influence was widespread, including collaborations with Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones and Steely Dan.

His catalogue is an historical testament to his shining legacy.
