William Carn is a Canadian trombonist of some note who was nominated in 2007 for a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy Awards) for the Traditional Jazz Album of the year. Carn, in the past, has worked and recorded with Rob McConnell, Barry Harris, Kenny Wheeler, and Steve Swallow among others. Run Stop Run is his latest project and will have an official CD release at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar in Toronto, Canada on January 12, 2012.
The group presents itself as a musical cooperative drawing on the compositional talents of all the members, and in the case of this disc, the twelve tracks are original music in the modern or new jazz style. While not without a certain charm, given its free flowing style supported by complex structures, combining jazz improvisation with original ideas, the outcome is often one of sameness. There are no discernible hummable melodies, and the toe-tapping component is completely lacking.
Whether the name of the track is “The Fallen”, “Butter Side Down,” or “His Eyes Are Sad And Knowing”, the front line of Carn on trombone and Don Scott on guitars, lays out the scene with a range of musical components that fills the soundscape. All of the musicians are technically competent and notable in their own right but that alone does not make the music interesting. Highly regarded alto sax player is on keyboards on “The Gift” and contributes three pieces “Beginning”, “Interlude” and “End”. Regrettably these compositions are nothing but an empty sound, and make no contribution to the project.
Louis Armstrong is quoted as saying “never play a thing the same way twice”. Perhaps this is a life lesson for this group.
TrackList: Beginning; The Fallen; Butter Side  Down; The Gift; Glassman; Murphy!; Interlude; His Eyes Are Sad And Knowing; LBJ; Q’s Idea; Rorschach; End
