Well, this is a new twist on crossover albums. The three talented Korean young ladies on piano, violin and cello have dreamt up an album centered around the general idea of dreams, sleep and that sort of thing. They brought in a variety of guest performers, including vocalists, mandolin, electronic sounds, noises and someone whispering and the whole thing was recorded and assembled in the studios of the Czech Radio in Prague. Not a classical album, but it has tunes from Astor Piazolla, Michael Nyman, Pat Metheny and David Bowie among others. Kenji Bunch is responsible for three of the tracks, and there’s even a lovely arrangement of My Funny Valentine.
The electronic effects are not overdone but seem to tie together the various tracks – there are 16 in all, including the “bonus tracks.” I didn’t expect to like this mishmash but honestly found it very enjoyable listening.
